Abstract

In learning English, writing is a skill that quite difficult to master by some students compared with speaking, listening, and reading. Writing is an activity that focuses on content, form, grammar, and structure of text. In English writing, students still often make mistakes in some parts of writing like spelling, word usage, and language style used.This research aims to describe the writing teaching strategies in essay writing classes inEnglish Education Department of IAIN Purwokerto. Writing teaching strategies is a way for lecturers to deliver essay writing material to students.This researcher fokus on the implementation of writing teaching strategies in essay writing classes in English Education Department of IAIN Purwokerto. In this research, the researcher conducted observations in the third-semester essay writing classes at English Education Department of IAIN Purwokerto. This research uses descriptive qualitative approach. Research data obtained through interviews directly with the resource persons, observation and documentation. There are three in this reserach, they are Head of English Education Department of IAIN Purwokert, the lecturer of essay writing who use writing teaching strategies, and the last interviewee is 6 students consisting of 3 students from 3 TBI A and 3 students from 3 TBI B. The results of the research show that the lecturer uses three types of writing teaching strategies to teaching essay writing class, namely: Modeled writing, guided writing, and independent writing. These three strategies are used sequentially from modeled writing to independent writing. In the process of learning essay writing students show positive attitude in the following learning process from lecturer.
