Abstract

Reading is a basic ability that must be possessed by every human being in the world. The objective of this research is to identify the difficulties faced by 8th grade studentsof MTs Ma’arif Nu 1 Kebasen and to find out the factors causing the students' difficultiesin reading comprehension. This research is qualitative descriptive research. The research was conducted in February 2022. The subject of research was the an eighth grade and English teacher of MTs Ma’arif NU 1 Kebasen. The techniques of data collection are interview, observation, and documentation. The technique of data analysis used in this research was data reduction, data display, and data verification. The result showed that there are fourdifficultiesfaced bystudentsin reading comprehension, those are: (1) they have difficulties to Understanding Vocabulary, (2) They Have Lack of Pupil Interest, (3) Students’ Anxiety, and (4) Lack of Concentration. Some of the students feel difficult to know the meaning of the text because they do not know about the meaning of the word. Students are also not interested in English teaching-learning process because English language is still foreign language for them. So, they do not know about the material that had been delivered by the teacher in the class. There are also four factors causing students' difficulties in reading comprehension. These are: (1) The Students Had Difficulties To Understanding Long Sentence In The Text, (2) House Environment, (3) School Environment, and (4) Limited Vocabulary.
