Abstract

In learning a foreign language, vocabulary works an important role. It is one basics of language that associates the four skills, speaking, listening, reading, and writing. In order to communicate well in foreign language, students should acquire a sufficient number of word know how to use the words. Even, someone has mastered grammar, but they do not have enough vocabulary, they will have difficulties in learning the four skills. Vocabulary is a problem for students in learning English. Usually, they easily memorize vocabulary, but they also often forget the vocabulary they have learned. Besides that, students have different strategies in learning vocabulary because they have different characteristics, interests, and motivations. Consequently, they have different learning strategies that are suitable with them. That’s why learning strategies are very important in learning every language, especially in learning English vocabulary. Insufficient vocabulary can lead to difficulties in learning English. Students need to be informed of various vocabulary learning strategies. Therefore, they can take more responsibility for their own learning. Consequently, they can become good language learning. This research used descriptive qualitative. This research was intended to describe twelfth students' vocabulary learning strategies in SMA Negeri 2 Purwokerto. In collecting data the researcher used interview, observation and Documentation data collection techniques. The qualitative data of this research was analyzed by using the inductive analysis method. The research finding are : 1) students used various strategies in learning vocabulary that are with their interests and their characteristics, they are : (a)Using dictionary, (b) Ask teacher for meaning, (c) Ask classmates for meaning, (d) Use English language media, (e) Keep vocabulary notebook, (f) Repeat new word, (g) Guess from textual context, (h) Flash card, (i) Practice in daily life, (j) Interact with native speaker, (k) Using new word in sentence, (l) Translate to L1, (m) Put English labels on physical object, (n) Understand context of sentence. 2) The most frequently used vocabulary learning strategies by students was used English language media.
