Abstract

This study is an experimental study that aims to determine the effectiveness of using the GIST strategy in teaching reading comprehension and to see whether there is a significant difference between learning strategies and learning outcomes on the reading comprehension of students at SMP Diponegoro 3 Kedungbanteng. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using statistical analysis techniques, and the hypothesis used a t-test in the IBM SPSS Statistics 26 program. Based on the results, there is a significant difference in teaching reading comprehension between students taught using the GIST strategy with students without using the GIST strategy at SMP Diponegoro 3 Kedungbanteng. The value of the t table of 2,004 the t-count value is 0,000 > t-table 2,004 with a df 27 and a significance level of 0.05. The probability ( Sig. 2-tailed) was lower than the significance level ( 0.000 < 0.05). Since t count > t table and p < 0.05, it can be assumed that the null hypothesis of no difference has been rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. This result showed that after the GIST strategy was used to teach reading comprehension, the results showed that the use of GIST (Generating Interaction Schemata and Text) strategy was effective in teaching students’ reading comprehension at 8th grade SMP Diponegoro 3 Kedungbanteng.
