Abstract

Since the pandemic badly impacted the learning environment, it impacted the lack of student motivation in learning reading comprehension. In this case, the teacher's strategy in teaching reading needs to be applied to help students comprehend the contents of the text well. One of the strategies is Collaborative learning. Collaborative learning is the process of gaining knowledge, skills, or abilities that students work together or in groups. This study aims to find out and analyze how the implementation of collaborative learning in reading comprehension in 9th grade of SMPN 3 Kedungbanteng. The English teacher and ninth-grade students were the subjects of the research. Interviews, observations, and documentation were conducted to obtain the research data. The data analysis techniques were data reduction, data analysis, and conclusion. The results of this study showed that the English teacher used Think-Pair-Share and Reciprocal Teaching as Collaborative learning techniques. According to observations, the teacher develops and poses a question, gives students a few minutes to think about a response, and then asks students to share their ideas. The Pair and Share components encourage learners to compare and contrast their understandings with those of another. In Reciprocal teaching, an English teacher asks students to identify information, themes, and ideas in the reading passages that are central and crucial enough to determine any reason for further consideration. There are strengths and weaknesses of collaborative learning. It has many advantages, including increasing students' self-esteem or self-confidence, increasing their vocabulary, and reducing students' loneliness and interest in reading. In addition, there are obstacles or weaknesses in collaborative learning, including during classes, the teacher and students discover problems in teaching and learning. such as class not being conducive, starting some students' less enthusiasm for learning but then too active in participating in the learning process, and being too noisy.
