Abstract

This study aims to examine the dominant factors that influence students' interest in learning English in the eighth grade of SMP Al Irsyad Al IslamiyyahPurwokerto. The sample in this study was all of the eighth-graders, totaling 296 students, which were selected based on purposive random sampling. The research design used is a descriptive quantitative method to describe the factors that influence the interest of eighth-graders in learning English, with data collection methods in the form of questionnaires and interviews. Data analysis was carried out using basic statistical analysis to find out the percentage of questions in the questionnaire. Then these results are supported by interviews conducted with the English teacher of eighth grade. The results of the study indicate that the factors that influence students' interest in learning English are internal factors consisting of physical factors, attention, readiness, and intelligence, as well as internal factors including family factors, teachers, facilities, and peers. The results of data analysis show that internal factors are more dominant in influencing students' interest in learning English in grade 8. This is evidenced by the percentage of internal factors of 75.04% while the percentage of internal factors is 66.06%. Keywords: Students’ Interest, Learning English
