Abstract

School-based health centers are located on or near school campuses to provide needed health services to the student population. These health centers have been associated with many student benefits such as improved health and academic outcomes. The purpose of this project was to collect stakeholder perspectives regarding a school-based health center. In the fall of 2018, employees (teachers, staff, administrators, supporting staff) at a traditional high school in northern California were invited to complete an online survey regarding their students’ health. The survey included both multiple choice and open-ended questions. Thirty-four out of 125 employees completed the survey for a response rate of 27%. Respondents designated the most important health services to offer students to be mental health services (32%) and medical services (32%), followed health education (14%), reproductive services (11%), and dental services (8%). The overwhelming majority of high school employees surveyed agreed or strongly agreed that a school-based health center would improve school attendance (91%) and academic performance (91%), as well as readiness to learn (94%). A major limitation of this study was the low response rate, possibly introducing significant bias into the results. At any rate, multiple choice answers and responses to open-ended questions reflected employees’ belief that the implementation of a school-based health center could positively impact student health and academic outcomes.
